IWAKI, Fukushima - The new school song for Iwaki Sogo High School, a new school set to open this spring formed by the integration of Iwaki Sogo and Yoshima high schools in Fukushima Prefecture, was unveiled at a ceremony on Jan. 20.
The composer of the song, internationally acclaimed conductor Kenichiro Kobayashi, who hails from Iwaki, and manga artist Riyoko Ikeda, author of "Versailles no Bara" ("The Rose of Versailles"), who wrote the lyrics, visited Iwaki Sogo High School to share their thoughts and emotions behind the new song.
福島県立いわき総合高と好間高が統合して今春に開校する「いわき総合高」の校歌が1月20日、発表された。校歌を作曲した世界的に有名な指揮者の小林研一郎さん（いわき市出身）や、作詞を担当した人気漫画「ベルサイユのばら」作者で漫画家の池田理代子さんらがいわき総合高を訪れ、校歌に込めた思いを伝えた。
Kobayashi, who also composed Iwaki Sogo High School's current school song, agreed to compose the new song due to his long-standing connection with the school. Ikeda, a close friend of Kobayashi, was invited to write the lyrics. Approximately 400 students from both high schools attended the unveiling ceremony.
Ikeda explained her intention behind the lyrics, which include the word "friend" four times. "Friends are lifelong treasures. It would make me truly happy if this sentiment is expressed [through the lyrics]," she said.
小林さんは現在のいわき総合高の校歌も作曲している縁から、新たな高校でも作曲を担当した。池田さんは小林さんと親交が深かったことから作詞を担当することになった。新たな校歌の発表会には、いわき総合高と好間高の生徒約400人が参加した。
池田さんは歌詞に込めた思いを披露した。「友」との歌詞を４回盛り込んだことについて「友は生涯の宝。（歌詞から）その思いを汲んでくれればとても幸いだ」と話した。
During the event, Kobayashi taught the students how to sing the school song. Using both his voice and a piano, he conveyed the imagery of the lyrics while enthusiastically encouraging the students with phrases like "Sing with strength!" and "That's a wonderful voice!"
会場では小林さんが生徒に歌い方をレッスンした。自ら歌ったりピアノを弾いたりしながら歌詞のイメージを伝え、「強く歌って！」「いい声だ！」など熱のこもった言葉を投げかけて指導した。
"I was moved by your singing. Please continue to sing like this [with strong voices in the future]," Kobayashi told the students after the lesson. World-class opera singer Yoshitaka Murata, who accompanied Kobayashi, also encouraged them, saying, "There is nothing embarrassing about singing loudly."
Rina Saito, a second-year student and president of the student council at Iwaki Sogo High School, said: "It was wonderful to directly feel the thoughts and emotions that the two creators wanted to convey. I want to do my best with the strength the song gives me."

レッスンを終えると、小林さんは「みんなの歌は感動的だった。（今後も）今のように（大きな声で）歌ってください」と生徒に思いを伝えた。一緒に訪れた世界的なオペラ歌手の村田孝高さんは校歌を歌い「大きい声を出すことは恥ずかしいことではない」と生徒に語りかけた。
新たな校歌を歌った、いわき総合高で生徒会長を務める斎藤里菜さん（２年）は「（作詞作曲の）2人の先生が伝えたかった思いを目の前で感じることができ良かった。校歌の力をもらって頑張りたい」と話した。
